Being there for others is part of skating event’s festivities

A Sk8 Park Family Event is happening at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Falls Creek Park and Skate Park, 900 Yett St. in Marble Falls.

The event is hosted by Elevate Church, which is part of the way members minister to the community. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline’s new 988 number will be activated nationally July 22, and organizers are using the Sk8 event to talk about mental health and help those who may battle these thoughts, while also helping others spot the signs of loved ones who may struggle with mental health.

“Many times when a tragedy happens, it affects the entire family,” Elevate Church Lead Paster Shane Wenger said. “People don’t call or reach out. But we can train people to spot the signs. We can help train people. We’ll have a specialty table for mental health awareness with the giveaway and prize tables.”

It is a competition and people can sign up in advance by going to eLOVatE.org.

Wenger noted others have committed to helping: Wake Point in Kingsland, J Bar Contractor Services in Burnet, and State Farm-Shane Stewart in Marble Falls are donating food, prizes and other items. The Marble Falls police and fire departments will be in attendance.

“We’ll have over $10,000 in giveaways,” Wenger said adding that much of it is Vans merchandise. “We’ll have Vans shoes, skateboards, BMX, scooters, stickers, a fishing trip by Hill Country Hammers, Guides and Outfitters, and Wake Surf lessons.”

Though it’s called a skating event, people who love BMX and other types of sports that use the skate park are invited to join, Wenger added.

“You never know where people are,” he said. “We want to be an encourager no matter where you are.”
